2008 Annual Town Election Results

The Town of Pelham currently has 1,003 registered voters. The Annual Town Election at which Town Officers are elected is held on the first Saturday of May in the elementary school auditorium. The Board of Selectmen, in compliance with M.G.L. Chapter 54, Section 64, determine the time the polls are open for voting. If there are no contested races the polls will open at 8:00 a.m. and close at noon. If there is a contested race, or if there is a controversial question on the ballot the Board of Selectmen will usually determine the hours to be from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

State Primaries and State Elections are held at the Community Center with the hours of polling being determined by M.G.L. Chapter 54, Section 64.

Voters can register at the office of the Town Clerk, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additionally, state law requires that the Board of Registrars hold special registration sessions between 2 -4 p.m. and 7 - 8 p.m. on the 20th day preceding an election.

Absentee Ballots

Absentee ballots, whenever possible, are available 30 days prior to an election. Absentee ballots must be applied for in writing by either the voter or a family member. Applications can be made on a per election or a calendar year basis.

An absentee ballot may be voted only if the voter is unable to vote at the polls on election day because of:

  • absence from their town during the hours the polls are open
  • physical disability
  • religious beliefs

The deadline for applying for absentee ballots is noon the day before the election.

Voters can apply for an absentee ballot two different ways:

By mailing a written request. The request must include the voter's name, voter's address, address to which the ballot is to be sent if different. The voter must sign the request, print his/her name, and date it. Request for absentee ballots should be sent to Town Clerk, 351 Amherst Road, Pelham, MA 01002.
Faxed requests are not recognized as written requests.

By coming to the Town Clerk's office and completing an application form. Once the application form has been completed and the Town Clerk verifies the individual is registered to vote, the voter can either vote the ballot in the office or have the ballot mailed to them. ABSENTEE BALLOTS CANNOT BE HAND CARRIED OUT OF THE TOWN CLERK'S OFFICE. However, a voted absentee ballot may be hand carried back by either the voter or a family member.
