PELHAM SLATE

Pelham was founded in 1743. It was the home of Capt. Daniel Shays, a Revolutionary War hero who led the 1786 Shays' Rebellion against state officials in Boston. Although the rebellion was defeated, this uprising shaped the history of our nation. The U.S. Congress responded to Shays' Rebellion by calling the first Constitutional Convention that drafted the Constitution of the United States and led to adoption of the federal Bill of Rights.

Pelham once had extensive fields and farms. Water powered grist and wooden turning mills dotted the streams. West Pelham served as a terminus of a regional electric trolley system, was the site of the Orient Springs health resort and the first factory to produce bamboo fly fishing rods in the United States.

Today, although Pelham boasts a population of less than 1500 citizens, it is a vibrant community of individuals who echo the spirit and commitment of Daniel Shays, its most famous citizen.
